Mountain Bike Kids Shred Camp

This program is currently unavailable. Click here to view all of our current programs.

Kids will participate in a week long mountain bike camp.  They will learn fundamental skills (safety, riding skills, and bike maintenance). The overall goal of the camp is to get kids outside biking and enjoying our local trails.

Please see below for updated descriptions of the sessions.
Session 1 (Grades 1-3)
8:00-9:45 am
These kids are riding on two wheels, but are overall new to riding a bicycle on singletrack and dirt surfaces. This session of camp will focus on lots of skill development with games and fun rides to get these kids more confident and focus on certain aspects of riding. The goal is to focus on having fun and being safe.

Session 2 (Grades 4-10)
10:00am-12:00pm
This session is designed for kids that have become confident riding a bicycle on two wheels, with the ability to steer and brake the bike appropriately, we move into more skill development of bicycle handling, overall confidence, and building up young mountain biking ambassadors. We teach appropriate trail and group riding etiquette and build on the child’s ability to brake, steer, and handle the bicycle on gravel both uphill and downhill.

NEW THIS YEAR!
Session 3 (Grades 4-10)
12:45pm-2:45pm
(This session will be at Bangor City Forest and will not circle back through the time to the start, so a hydration pack will be needed.  If you don't have one, you find many online, but CLICK HERE for a reasonably priced one.)
This session is designed for those riders who have moved from a ‘beginner’ to an ‘intermediate’ mountain biker. Though age is not the determining factor, kids usually have been riding a bicycle confidently for a couple years. With session 3 comes more substantial mountain biking with drills specific to handling a bicycle on singletrack. Capacity for riding grows to longer consecutive riding stretches, maintaining energy and enthusiasm for riding, and the ability to show multiple riding skills naturally.  Riding time is extended, technical riding skills are practiced throughout a ride, and coaches help kids to identify various line choices, handling the bike with more control.

EVALUATION DAY FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN SESSION 2 OR 3
For those interested in participating in session 2 or 3 there will be an evaluation day on July 10th at 9:30 at Essex St. Woods Trails. This will give the coach the opportunity to observe rider skill and ability level.  The coach will then recommend placement for session 2 or 3 through email that afternoon.  Any questions please contact Tim at tim.baude@bangormaine.gov
