Shred Camp
Kids will participate in a week-long mountain bike camp.  They will learn fundamental skills (safety, riding skills, and bike maintenance). The overall goal of the camp is to get kids outside biking and enjoying our local trails.

Please see below for updated descriptions of the sessions.
Session 1 (Grades 1-3)
8:00-9:45 am
These kids are riding on two wheels, but are overall new to riding a bicycle on singletrack and dirt surfaces. This session of camp will focus on lots of skill development and fun rides to get these kids more confident and focus on certain aspects of riding. The goal is to focus on having fun and being safe.

Session 2 (Grades 4-10)
This session is designed for kids that have become confident riding a bicycle on two wheels, with the ability to steer and brake the bike appropriately, we move into more skill development of bicycle handling, overall confidence, and building up young mountain biking ambassadors. We teach appropriate trail and group riding etiquette and build on the child’s ability to brake, steer, and handle the bicycle on gravel both uphill and downhill.

Adventure Ride
Session 3 (Grades 4-10)
Tuesday June 22nd & Thursday June 24th 5:00pm-7:00pm
(This session will be at Bangor City Forest and will not circle back through the time to the start, so a hydration pack will be needed.  If you don't have one, you find many online, but CLICK HERE for a reasonably priced one.)
This session is designed for those riders who have moved from a ‘beginner’ to an ‘intermediate’ mountain biker. Though age is not the determining factor, kids usually have been riding a bicycle confidently for a couple years. With session 3 comes more substantial mountain biking with drills specific to handling a bicycle on singletrack. Capacity for riding grows to longer consecutive riding stretches, maintaining energy and enthusiasm for riding, and the ability to show multiple riding skills naturally.  Riding time is extended, technical riding skills are practiced throughout a ride, and coaches help kids to identify various line choices, handling the bike with more control.

**Kids that want to participate in session 3 will need to be evaluated the week before camp or have participated in session 3 last year.**
Week-long Format:
Monday-Wednesday: Skill development and riding practice
Thursday: Kids will have an opportunity to practice riding a race course in preparation for a race on Friday.  We will focus on bringing our newly learned skills to the trails and sportsmanship.
Friday: Race Day! We will have a series of races in which riders with similar abilities will race against each other in staggered groups.  While groups are racing campers will be on race course cheering on their peers.
Important Information
This year we will have a mandatory bike inspection the week before camp.  Your child’s bike will need to be inspected by one of our partner bike shops Ski Rack Sports in Bangor and Pat’s Bike Shop in Brewer.  The inspection can take place the week of June 14th-18th.  These will be drop-in appointments however be prepared to leave your bike if repairs are needed.  You will receive a certificate, that certifies your bike is ready for camp!  Your child will not be able to participate without this inspection.
